Swan Lake
Friday 7th- Saturday 8th December
ROYAL CONCERT HALL NOTTINGHAM
The St Petersburg Ballet Theatre will be making a welcome return to the Royal Concert Hall this winter from Tuesday 4th December- – Saturday 8th December. St Petersburg Ballet Theatre, its superb orchestra, stylish productions and artistic excellence puts them in a class of their own.
The third and last ballet composed by Tchaikovsky, The Nutcracker, made its premiere at the Mariinsky in December 1892. This magical Christmas story of Clara on her spellbinding journey from her family home to a fantasy kingdom; the Nutcracker Prince, and her transformation into the beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy is a favourite festive treat for all the family. Dazzling sets and costumes combine with Tchaikovsky’s world famous score to make this ballet a timeless hit.
The St Petersburg Ballet Theatre principals and soloists will present the stunning Stars of the SPBT Gala where the dancers perform some of the world’s most famous one act ballets, short works, and divertissements. The Gala programme includes some of classical ballet’s, most popular and celebrated highlights including the breathtaking one-act ballet Chopiniana, a glittering Paquita, the lively Spanish panaderos dance from Raymonda, a witty Harlequinade, Auber’s Grand Pas Classique and Fokine’s The Dying Swan.
The powerful story of Swan Lake tells of the beautiful swan-princess Odette, who falls in love with Prince Siegfried and is released from the spell of the evil Rothbart. Featuring the exceptional technical skills of the soloists and the sheer brilliance of the corps de ballet, the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre will bring you the very best in classical ballet. With magnificent court scenes, enchanting lake scenes, stunning costumes and Tchaikovsky’s music that soars majestically above them all, Swan Lake promises an evening of passion and magic that few ballets can begin to rival.
Tchaikovsky was 36 when he wrote Swan Lake, which was his first commission of a full-length ballet, and the first reviews declared it a failure. The re-staging we know today was presented in 1895 and Swan Lake now enjoys a legendary and prominent position in the world dance repertoire.
The St Petersburg Ballet Theatre was founded in 1994 by Konstantin Tatchkin. Don Quixote, Giselle and Swan Lake were the first productions, followed by The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty and La Bayadère.
This artistic talent, together with authentic choreography and beautiful designs has helped give the St Petersburg Ballet Theatre the well-earned reputation that they have acquired in so short a time. They have already toured worldwide picking up wonderful reviews wherever they have appeared and this year has seen them make their sensational debut in Japan.
The company is presented by Artsworld Presentations, who under the banners of 'visiting dance' and 'visiting opera' have so successfully presented Russian ballet companies as well as Opera from Eastern Europe in this country in recent years. In fact it is in response to the extraordinary appreciation and demand from theatres and audiences that they are bringing this much loved company back with their exciting productions of these most popular classics.
